Halfway Responds to Vehicle Accident With Heavy Entrapment On I81 SB
On July 6th, Halfway was alerted with Williamsport Fire & EMS for a reported vehicle accident with entrapment. Crew arrived to find the accident beneath the I70 Bridge at Exit 4. Chief 26 arrived and established command and confirmed one occupant still trapped and requested aviation to the scene. The vehicle had heavy front end damage and the cargo area of the van was completely destroyed leaving a trail of debris.
Firefighters from Williamsport, Halfway, and Funkstown worked together to free the occupant who was heavily entrapped while Berkley County EMS worked on a second occupant who was able to be pulled from the wreckage onto the back portion of the truck. The passenger involved was transported by ground to Meritus Medical Center. It took crews nearly 15 – 20 minutes to free the driver who was flown by Maryland State Police Aviation Command’s Trooper 3 to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center with serious injuries.
The main travel lanes of the Interstate remained shut down for a few hours while MSP began their reconstruction investigation. Once all FD units were clear, they were able to reopen the collector lain allowing traffic to flow. The accident is still currently under investigation.
