Halfway Responds To Find Trash Can Fire

April 9, 2022

On the morning of April 9th, Halfway was alerted at 01:55 hours for an Automatic Fire Alarm at the Holiday Inn Express on Railway Lane. We responded on the call that morning with 5 personnel. While enroute to the call, Washington County received additional 911 calls reporting some type of fire on the outside of the building. Crews approached the scene and could see the building was in the process of evacuating all occupants. Upon arrival, crews found a trash can near one of the secondary entrances that was on fire with a smoke condition on the first floor.

Individuals staying at the hotel were able to knock down the flames using the hotel’s dry-chem fire extinguishers prior to our arrival. Firefighters were able to douse the trash can using a water extinguisher to ensure the fire was out. Firefighters were able to remove the outer covering of the building and using thermal imagers were able to check the area for any extension into the building. Firefighters thoroughly checked the upper levels above the fire confirming no extension issues and ventilated the smoke from the first floor. Firefighters called an “All Clear” at 02:36 hours at which time our crews wrapped up and cleared the scene.
