Halfway Responds For Tractor Trailer Rollover On I81 NB
On July 5th, Halfway responded out with Williamsport Fire & EMS, Funkstown VFC, and Washington County Hazmat for a reported vehicle accident on Interstate 81 at the 3 mile marker. Washington County had reports of a tanker truck rollover with heavy damage to the cab of the truck. Units arrived at Exit 4 to find a tractor trailer in the collector lane hauling liquid asphalt on its side with a large spill of the trucks cargo across all the northbound lanes on Interstate 81.
The spill from the accident caused a secondary accident involving several vehicles that were caught up in the spill and lost control of their vehicles. Upon investigation, it was found the driver was able to self-extricate himself from the truck. No one involved suffered any life threatening injuries from the incident. The operator of the truck was transported for minor injuries and one subject from the secondary accident was also transported as well with minor injuries.
Due to the spill, Interstate 81 was fully shut down for several hours. State Highway crews responded out to conduct emergency road repairs causing major congestion issues to the area throughout the night.
